In a town celebrated for its historical train attraction, and aptly named New Freedom, exists another “little engine that could”… VFW Post 7012.

Most members of New Freedom VFW and the surrounding area are aware of the plan to build and relocate Post 7012. These plans were set into motion in 2020… when after careful consideration, it was agreed that the purpose and mission of serving veterans, their families, and the community, would be best accomplished in a building equipped to accommodate them. The current location served its purpose for over 75 years by being a gathering place and headquarters for local veterans but is now limiting our reach due to lack of parking, poor accessibility for disabled or elderly veterans and visitors, and its inability to provide a welcoming atmosphere to veterans with young children.

Planning, fundraising, and seeking approval to move forward with the sale of our current location began immediately with enthusiasm and support… but amid all those efforts came a battle no one could’ve anticipated, the Covid pandemic. In addition to the loss of life, Covid claimed many small businesses and non-profit organizations that were unable to survive the economic impact. It is estimated that 11,000 VFW and American Legion halls throughout our country succumbed to the hardships created by the pandemic. We were one of the lucky ones, we prevailed …but not without significant struggles and disruptions. Plans to relocate our Post remained on hold while the focus to merely weather the storm and stay afloat became a priority.

We held on, went through a precarious time of uncertainty, came out the other side and are happy to report that 2023 was a positive rebuilding year… rebuilding of staff and the focus and determination of our members. The year ended strong and we have regained the momentum and enthusiasm for expanding our mission in the New Freedom community.

A campaign to appeal for help in our fundraising efforts was recently launched when Burkentine Construction graciously sent a marketing team to capture what is so special about Post 7012 and its importance to Southern York County. We invite you to view the video, share and donate through the link on our website, by mail to VFW Post 7012- 123 W Main St. New Freedom PA 17349 or in person when you visit.
