Monday, January 13th 🇺🇸

This is supposed to be the Monday newsletter…detailing events and reminders for Post 7012. My purpose for composing this list every Monday is to keep our members informed and involved in all that we do and have to offer. I’ll do that at the end…but first, I want to share a story from yesterday.

Not every day at the New Freedom VFW is a success. Some days we achieve goals that will allow us to thrive and continue on, and some days we are challenged to stay afloat…it ebbs and flows… but we don’t quit, we keep fighting and pressing on. Yesterday…I was sweetly reminded of WHY we do that.

The entire week leading up to Sunday was a struggle, the snow and frigid temperatures seemed to cause a hibernation effect and attendance at Post 7012 was slim…but on this frosty Sunday afternoon, my heart was warmed by the presence of those it was intended to benefit.

Yesterday, while filling in on a shift I don’t typically cover, I was surrounded by, and serving, 6 veterans and 3 of their spouses. 4 of the Veterans were current or former officers of a VFW Post. They were watching a televised football game, eating hot dogs, sharing beers and harassing each other in a way only comrades can. They laughed, they poked fun at each other, they commiserated and reminisced. They were present on this cold day not only to support Post 7012, but to lavish one of our canteen staff with gifts and well wishes on the impending birth of her first child… you heard me correctly, they were attending a baby shower. These Veterans, heroes who sacrificed a segment of their life to serve their country… and committed to the potential risk of losing their own lives… showed up to support one of the team members keeping their beloved Post 7012 alive and well.

To witness their camaraderie as Veterans, and their willingness to expose their sweet and gentle giant hearts, will live permanently on my highlight reel of WHY Post 7012 exists… it is a haven for Veteran kinship and a place to connect with their community… and we ALL get to be a part of it in some capacity… as a Veteran, a family member of a Veteran, or a source of support to both.

Thank you for your service… a brave endeavor earlier in your life, that continues to give mine a purpose and passion.
