Veteran Recognition for Dan Mentzell
Corporal Elmer L. Mentzell Jr. enlisted with the United States Marine Corps on November 21st, 1968. His Basic Training took place at Parris Island, SC where he graduated on April 2nd, 1969 with Platoon 314, Third Recruit Battalion.
Dan went on to complete Infantry Training at Camp Lejeune, NC @ Camp Geiger in June of 1969 and was promoted to PFC. He then attended Motor Transport School at Montford Point NC and was promoted to LCPL upon completion on July 30th, 1969.
He then received orders to report to Camp Pendleton for Jungle Training and after completion was assigned to Truck Company, H & S Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA. Dan was promoted to CPL on February 9th, 1970, and then received orders of deployment to Vietnam.
On March 25th, 1970, Dan arrived at Danang Airport, Vietnam. He was assigned to Motor Transport Platoon, Support Company, First Combat Engineer Battalion, First Marine Division, Camp Faulkner. His job was to deliver equipment, supplies, and materials to the tactical areas of responsibility in the Northern I-Corps. He assisted in building and repairing landing zones, bridges, and roadways.
Dan’s tour in Vietnam ended on December 7th, 1970. He was released from active duty on the 15th of December and transferred to Marine Corps Reserve 4th Combat Engineer Battalion Baltimore, MD 4th Marine Division.
When Dan arrived home on December 20th, 1970, he met the girl of his dreams, Diane, and married her on November 20th, 1971. Dan and Diane have two children and 4 grandchildren.
Dan was honorably discharged on November 21st, 1974. His medals and awards include:
